Emerging adulthood is a phase in life for  those  above 18, but below 30 years of age, and has mostly been linked  to social transformations in industrialized countries like extended education increased labor force participation, postponing important milestones like marriage and children (Arnett, 2007). However, those who  critique Jeffrey Arnett’s "emerging adulthood" concept argue that there are various paths of transition to adulthood, which are not all linked to prolonged education. According to Côté   (2014), the concept of emerging adulthood is a myth that has been created   and is based on unsubstantiated claims, that may result in the adoption of wrong policies and threaten  of young adults. He also argued that this was the result of flawed evidence and inadequate methodological base to reach conclusions about the development stage was wrong, and there  are many who still go through the traditional route in life.
The social context  and opportunities  partly affect youth transition and there are various  paths to transitions to adulthood as well as structural constraints and not merely delayed responsibilities and prolonged education. Côté   (2014) pointed out that there is a need to take into consideration the social-economic factors that prolong transition from adolescence to adulthood.  The ecological approach  highlights that not all youths go through the extended adulthood phase.  The   writer used the example of Arnett’s narrative that people in all the social classes experience  emerging adulthood, and  this wrong since it cannot be generalized (Côté, 2014).
