Italy’s ‘Ndrangheta crime family has recently resurfaced in the news stories as more than 350 of its members await trial in the Calabria region of Southern Italy. For centuries, the ‘Ndrangheta crime family has terrorized Italian residents and people from around the world. According to experts in mafia activity, the ‘Ndrangheta’s roots can be traced back to the eighteenth century (France 24, 2021). The name ‘Ndrangheta, in Greek, translates to a “society of men of honor.” From this definition, one would think that its initial members formed the group with good intentions. However, as recent decades have shown, the ‘Ndrangheta is far from a dedicated group. They engage in drug trafficking, money laundering, kidnapping, extortion, and illegal waste trafficking (France 24, 2021).
The ‘Ndrangheta crime family’s deviant behavior is organized crime. Organized crime is one of the many deviant behaviors in society today (Beare, 2017). Compared to other deviant behaviors, organized crime ranks even higher because it involves many aberrant behaviors. For instance, as stated, the ‘Ndrangheta crime family engages in illegal activities, including extortion, kidnapping, money laundering, and drug trafficking. Each of these criminal activities has an undesirable effect on society (Beare, 2017). For instance, in one case, the ‘Ndrangheta crime family murdered a businesswoman in Calabria for refusing to give up her land to her neighbor affiliated with the group.
