Comparing and Contrasting the Functions of SANE and SART
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a Registered Nurse (RN) with exceptional knowledge and training to offer comprehensive care to sexual assault victims. He or she can carry out a forensic investigation and thus provide expert evidence in a court of law. On the other hand, the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) refers to a community-centered team tasked with coordinating responses to sexual assault victims. The team could include a SANE, advocate the sexual assault victim, healthcare facility’s personnel, prosecutors, judges, law enforcement, and other professionals with particular interests in helping the sexual assault victims. Despite their different functions, both SANE and SART are tasked with ensuring that sexual assault victims get the necessary help, including facilitating them to seek justice via the legal system. Whereas SANE is an RN with specialized knowledge in caring for and treating sexual assault victims, the SART constitutes a team of compassionate professionals providing an immediate, multi-disciplinary response to adult and adolescent sexual assault victims. Both SANE and SART offer necessary medical care, advocacy, emotional support, crisis intervention, education and assistance, and individual health-legal examinations to sexual assault victims.
In order to provide comprehensive care, the function of the SANE includes assessing and treating the victim holistically, taking into account both long-term and acute impacts of sexual violence victimization.
