Therapy becomes optimally effective when patients disclose their feelings, behaviors, experiences, and thoughts without fear that the information revealed will be shared with third parties. However, for adolescents or minors, the situation changes since their parents have the right to know the treatment progress. The following are challenges related to confidentiality when the psychotherapy client is an adolescent or a minor.
Minors or adolescents do not have the right to confidentiality. Unless their parents sign a contract to respect the privacy rights between their children and therapist, they have the right to know what is happening. Second, therapists might share the minor’s information with third parties, such as researchers or advertisers. Third, when the right of an adolescent or a minor client is not subjected to absolute privacy, the information shared during therapy might be disclosed to other parties (Jackson, Burns, & Richter, 2014). As a result, if the minor client knows that their right to privacy has been violated, it might damage the relationship between the therapist and the child involved.
