In his article, Jacob Cohen appears to strongly criticize null-hypothesis significance testing (NHST) (Cohen, 1994). Cohen is surprised by the fact that despite NHST being highly misleading, it is still widely used by the psychologists and other researchers. According to the author, NHST is misleading because the null hypothesis (H0) is rarely true, scientists just simplify reality when they think in binary terms such as effect versus no effect and researchers do not usually get what they want by using NHST procedure (Cohen, 1994). 
The author is adamant that living with p values is not a good idea and he advises scholars to find new statistical tools to replace NHST. He has made it apparent that what many scientists look from NHST is the probability that a particular hypothesis is true provided that evidence is availed (Cohen, 1994). On the other hand, what a researcher gets from a standardized test is the probability of the evidence assuming that null hypothesis is true. Ignorance of the most scientists about the exact operation of null hypothesis significance testing is what leads to many errors. One of the most neglected or ignored constituents of this test is the power (Cohen, 1994). Some of the factors that will determine whether a particular effect will be regarded as significant or not include the selected alpha, the size of the sample, the expected effect size and the power (Cohen, 1994). In the statistical tests, the power is referred to as the probability that the test will reject H0 in case null hypothesis is not true.
