In his article, Jacob Cohen appears to strongly criticize null-hypothesis significance testing (NHST) (Cohen, 1994). Cohen is surprised by the fact that despite NHST being highly misleading, it is still widely used by the psychologists and other researchers. According to the author, NHST is misleading because the null hypothesis (H0) is rarely true, scientists just simplify reality when they think in binary terms such as effect versus no effect and researchers do not usually get what they want by using NHST procedure (Cohen, 1994).
The author is adamant that living with p values is not a good idea and he advises scholars to find new statistical tools to replace NHST. He has made it apparent that what many scientists look from NHST is the probability that a particular hypothesis is true provided that evidence is availed (Cohen, 1994).
