[date]As human beings, our cognitive ability is conscious of is physical activities. We are aware of what our mind commands our body to do. It shows how powerful our brains can be when it comes to doing its task. Apart from our consciousness, there is still more to explore about the extent of what our minds can do. In theory, our minds would find a way to imagine or picture something our senses have not experienced yet. For instance, we try to put together previous images of food that match the description of the new food that our friend tells us. In a way, we have formed an expectation of the food despite not having seen it with our own eyes (Pitt, 2000).
Mental representation is the scientific term for using symbols on things we try to imagine even if our senses are not yet familiar with it (Pitt, 2000). In our minds, we pick images, sounds, smells, or tastes that may closely relate to something of which we try to think. When we explain to someone what kind of costume is perfect for a party, we think of a theme that suggests a general idea. For instance, a cowboy theme means cowboy hats, knee length boots, and leather jackets. It means that we already have an expected mental image for particular things.
One of the types of mental representations is the mental model. The mental model is the visual explanation of a system or how something operates. It simplifies cognitive processes into a flow chart type to give the process a picture (O'Brien & Albrecht, 1992).
