Question 4
Anxiety is a mental health disorder that makes people feel worried and nervous. Although having anxiety is a common occurrence in most people's lives, having intense and excessive worry may interfere with the daily performance of an individual. People with anxiety disorder often have panic attacks because they lack control over their feelings and worries. Having control over one’s feeling is one of the ways that can reduce anxiety which may lead to depression (Mischel, 1981). The longer a person has anxiety, the higher the chances that they will not be in a position to take control of their fears. A person is considered to be suffering from anxiety disorder if the fears they are feeling are out of proportion with the actual problems they may be having. Some of the common types of anxiety are phobias, separation anxiety, and social anxiety disorder. It is also possible for a person to have more than one type of disorder at one given time (Mischel, 1981). Anxiety can also be caused by medical conditions such as diabetes or respiratory disorders. People that have withdrawn from alcohol are also prone to suffer from an anxiety disorder.
Although anxiety and stress may have a negative effect on a person, there are different ways that a person can cope with stress and anxiety. One of the ways of coping with anxiety and stress is by keeping oneself physically active. Having regular exercise is essential because it keeps one busy, but it also helps reduce the levels of stress and improve the mood of an individual (Miller, 1980). For better results, it is recommended to start slow, and as the body adjusts to the exercise, one can keep increasing the intensity of the exercise. The other way of coping with stress is by avoiding drugs such as alcohol. Alcohol and other drugs have an anti-depressant quality, and they are prone to increase the level of anxiety rather than reduce the problem. There are also professional ways of reducing stress and depression, such as meditation and yoga. Furthermore, having enough sleep is instrumental in reducing the level of stress as one gets to have enough sleep (Miller, 1980). Finally, it is essential to learn about the disorder and to avoid the triggers that cause anxiety and disorder.
