Susan’s anxiety is not out of proportion, and Susan’s reaction is normal. Susan is nervous and anxious as she must speak, but many shy away people from public speaking, especially in front of a large gathering of people. Prior preparation helps in reducing her anxiety public speaking, but she needs to be more relaxed. The tension and avoidant behaviors are linked to the stressful situations, but there is no concern as there is no significant discomfort and deterioration in psychological symptoms (Lindner et al., 2019). . Susan’s anxiety is neither excessive nor irrational, but there are individuals with social anxiety disorder (social phobia), which may persist in different social situations, besides pubic speaking.
It would be necessary to consider how long she has had these symptoms and the extent to which this affects her on a day to day basis. If the anxiety symptoms occur for a long period of time, then this is a concern, and especially if there is a history of excessive fear or anxiety. Additionally, if there are instances where this affects her daily functioning based on past experiences where she has avoided speaking then she needs to be more aware of her thoughts. The anxiety is short lived and there is no major interruption in Susan’s life, which means that her reaction is normal. Thus, there is no concern and Susan’s thorough preparation is helpful identify what to say and she may get more comfortable.
Differential diagnoses for anxiety disorder in public speaking include those have a hard time in public such as social phobia, but Susan’s condition appears temporary. On the other hand, intense anxiety and worry that cause significant discomfort, which interrupts the social, and other spheres of life would be a concern as this has a negative impact on daily living, activities and functioning. People who have persistent anxiety in social situations and are afraid of being negatively evaluated in these situations in cases such as being judged as anxious, misinformed, stupid, or boring are more likely to have social anxiety disorder. Fear, anxiety, or avoidance persists and closely linked to the social situation and not substance abuse or other conditions then the anxiety is specific to certain contexts.
