The fundamental attribution error involves the human inclination to interpret people's behaviors based on internal determinants like disposition, or personality. It is also the underestimation of the impact external factors, for example, situational influences, wield on another individual's conduct. When explaining an individual's behavior, people tend to over-emphasize the disposition's role while paying little or no attention to possible situational constituents. On the other hand, people justify their actions by attributing their reactions to situational factors. In a nutshell, the fundamental attribution error illustrates why human beings regularly pass harsh judgments against others while justifying themselves by intellectualizing their unfair acts. Fundamental attribution error, as well as self fulfilling prophecies and heuristics affect decision making.
Fundamental attribution error explains that people believe that antagonistic actions only come from bad people. If a person behaves unacceptably, it is solely because such an individual is a hostile person (Luttrell, 2016). For example, sometime last month, a certain man cut me off while driving to school. I felt hurt, and my mind went on a race trying to figure out why someone in his normal senses would rudely intercept my way, considering I had an exam to catch, and I was getting late. My first thought was, "What a contemptible person!" I looked at him with a lot of hate. However, I now realize that I committed the fundamental attribution error. I did not even consider the likelihood that the man was rushing a sick person to the hospital, or he was racing against time to save someone's life. Surprisingly, when I cut people off in traffic, something I do quite often, I tend to convince myself that I had no better option. I focus on situational influences, such as being late to class or meeting. I disregard what my action might infer...
