Definition of fundamental attribution error according to Andy Luttrell’s video
Fundamental attribution error primarily examines how we explain behavior in accordance with internal and external factors. This tendency reflects on analyzing why someone is behaving in a particular manner due to their personality or due to a specific effect from their environment (Luttrell 2016). It also investigates whether there is something inherent in a person’s sense of self that promotes a particular behavior or is a specific external factor guiding their behavior.
In an instance, we might explain that the fact that an office manager is jobless based on their character and blame them for their current misfortune, when in fact they might have been recently fired or retrenched due to the poor state of the economy. The fundamental attribution error highlights that people tend to automatically associate behaviors with internal influences such as disposition and personality, rather than external factor, almost by default (Luttrell 2016).

In one example, while standing in a café with a stranger, we were both receiving a cup of hot coffee. I watched the stranger who appeared to be in a hurry and the stranger, accidentally spilled his coffee all over the countertop.
