Alcohol causes acute psychological effects. It causes toxic reactions such as nausea, vomiting, and asphyxiation, heat loss caused by enlarging of blood vessels and minimizes sleeping time and occasioning sleep withdrawal. It affects pregnancy by increasing chances of fetal retardation, (Levinthal, 2016, p. 162-63). Chronic alcohol use results in tolerance and withdrawal, liver diseases such as fatty liver and alcoholic hepatitis. Heart diseases such as stroke, high blood pressure and blockage of arteries occur while cancers of the liver, breast, stomach, colon and pancreas become prevalent (Levinthal, 2016, p. 177-78).

The DSM-5 manual for analyzing alcohol use disorder documents the signs and symptoms of alcohol use disorder to be; consumption of high amounts of alcohol for extended periods, inability to stop drinking, craving alcoholic beverages and spending a lot of time obtaining or consuming it. Additionally, it causes failures at work, home and in parenting and withdrawing from friends and family. Moreover, it results in tolerance to alcohol and onset of withdrawal symptoms without it (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2016, July).

People utilize hallucinogens in various ways. Traditionally they were for spiritual purposes of assisting leaders to communicate with ancestors to aid their decisions about war, hunting, and selection of leaders. Moreover, churches used them as a form of sacrament. Today they elicit an experience of mind-blowing and body cleansing, to bring people closer to God, causes healing, unveil truths and unite them with ancestors. Medically, they helped to treat some mental illnesses, deal with alcoholism and addiction. Currently, the hallucinogens such as THC and PCP are administered to cancer patients to alleviate nausea after chemotherapy and to minimize pressure in the eyes caused by glaucoma (Rhead, 2014).
