Compare and contrast needs-based theories of motivation. Which offers the most value to healthcare managers? Discuss the role of thinking processes in organizational communication and problem solving. In what ways could you, as a manager, use thinking to improve communication and problem solving?
The Acquired-Needs theory posits that people’s behavior is influenced by the need for achievement, affiliation and power. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs assumes that the higher order needs can only be fulfilled after the lower order needs have been satisfied. Physiological needs are the low order needs and self-actualization need are the highest (Schermerhorn, 2012). Alderfer’s ERG Theory is similar to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and compresses the five classes to existence needs, relatedness needs and growth needs. Herzberg two- factory is closely related to Maslow’s needs theory as it consolidates needs into hygiene and motivators. Herzberg‘s theory is most applicable for healthcare managers as it highlights the motivator and hygiene factors that affect job satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The theories all highlight factors that influence an employee's motivation, but it takes time to acquire needs, where the people the needs or goals are what most motivate them (Schermerhorn, 2012).
