There are numerous environmental problems resulting from human population pressure on local natural resources throughout the world. Researchers have dedicated a large proportion of ecological research to finding solutions to these issues. Fresh water is one of the natural resources that attract significant attention of ecological research due to its importance and usage to the human population (Ake, 2008). This paper seeks to address fresh water use for development or conservation of the Everglades in South Florida. Through this discussion, we will explain the history of the event including how the situation reached a crisis point and document as many sides of the situation as possible and include the reached resolution and how the crisis may be resolved in the future.
The Everglades in South Florida are the largest sub-tropical wilderness remaining in the lower 48 states. They have both salty and fresh water, pine rock lands, open prairies, mangrove forests, offshore coral reefs, and tropical hardwood forests. There is a wide spectrum of wildlife that lives in the Everglades: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and aquatic birds. These species are threatened or endangered due to lack of water conservation in the Everglades (Ake, 2008). Throughout the humankind history, water has remained the central element for the survival and existence of societies. Several wars have been fought over water as a valuable resource, in addition, risks of future conflicts exist in various parts of the world where there is a short supply of water.
