The drug is also used alongside other medications, such as Insulin, whenever the need arises. The brand name for the drug is Amaryl, manufactured by Sanofi Aventis US. The drug was first rolled out in 1995 and is administered in different strengths, including 1mg, 2 mg, and 4 mg. The generic name for the drug is glimepiride and is categorized in the drug class sulfonylureas. Through the use of the drug, patients are cushioned from other complications, such as kidney damage and challenges with sexuality. When there is proper control of diabetes, the risks of stroke and heart attack can also be mitigated. Glimepiride reduces glucose levels by inducing the body to produce insulin, which assists in lowering blood sugar levels.
