How the Shipping Security Concerns Have Affected Ship and Ports Operations Since 2001
The 9/11 terror attack has not only had significant effects on air operations but also in the ports operations. The ports have been forced to invest more in security measures. The ports have since involved intelligence and use of automated information in the identification of containers that could pose a risk of terrorism (Frittelli, 2005). The ports have to pre-screen containers arriving at the ports. Additionally, the ports have also had to use tamper evident containers to track terrorism in the seas. Several security initiatives have been devised. An example is the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code which provides the security measures that the ports had to implement to suppress acts of terrorists against ships (Frittelli, 2005).
There has also been an improvement in the physical security. For example, crowding at the ports has been discouraged and the ports management have since put in place measures to ease congestions at the terminals. Ports have emphasised on cargo integrity and improveme...
