One of the basic principles that I have learnt in this course is being progressive in my work. This philosophical ideology enables people to overcome complex situations by utilizing what they already know to gradually solve the unknown. Through my learning experience, I have realized that instructors encourage students by provoking their curiosity. This makes learning interesting by making learning revolve around learners’ abilities, experiences and interests. This application is applicable not only in class but also in any future endeavour. The provocation of curiosity in any field results to innovation and creativity. It leads to one wanting to find out what so unique about a problem and wanting to solve it.
In literature, the person who brought about the success of progressivism is John Dewey. Dewey teaches that people are social animals and learn best when they actively engage with others and indulge themselves in activities that bare some meaning to them. This implies that knowledge is found when people apply previous experiences in their lives into solving new and more complex problems. The major step that I have learnt in solving problems is firstly, understanding the dynamics of the problem. Once you understand the problem then you can define it and be able to propose various hypothesis or strategies of solving it. Then one has to examine the consequences of his or her various hypotheses through experience from previously applied strategies. The final step is to test all the likely outcomes.
