Why Airports and Terminals are Crowded at Times
There are many reasons airports and terminals are crowded at times and relatively empty at others. However, most notable are flight schedules, security screening, and unexpected conditions that cause flight delays and constricted movement of people and goods within the airport (Dinler & Rankin, 2020; Halpern & Graham, 2015). The routing system of an airport encompasses the aprons, taxiways, runway systems, and air traffic control towers that must be designed to accommodate the needs of the airport and its users (Halpern & Graham, 2015). According to Möhlenbrink (2013), airport schedules are based on when airlines envisage having the most passengers. Consequently, airlines give more flight options on specific days, such as the end and the beginning of the week. Moreover, airlines will schedule their flights to arrive and depart simultaneously, leading to more people in the airport at specific times, making it crowded. Dinler & Rankin (2020) also identify security and screening procedures as a factor leading to airport congestion. Security screening is thorough, methodological, and very slow, which causes long lines when there is high traffic at the airport.
