1. What does the term motivation mean, and what is its relationship to job performance?
Motivation can be defined as the combinations of the desires and energy of an individual in achieving a certain goal. Motivation can either be intrinsic or extrinsic. Motivation being intrinsic involves things like satisfaction or a feeling of achievement. Extrinsic motivation involves things like rewards, attainment of goals and punishment. Having a positive attitude increases the intrinsic motivation of a person (Greenberg, 2011). For example, employees of a certain organization are intrinsically motivated therefore their performance and satisfaction at work will increase. Motivation enables employees to increase their productivity and also allows forms to attain their higher levels of output.
2. What are some reasons why people join groups?
One of the main reasons as to why people join groups is because group membership gives individuals some form of need satisfaction. Groups can fulfill the various needs of these individuals. However, some group members might fail to realize the benefits of these groups. Therefore people join groups for companionship, survival and security, affiliation and control as well as power and control. Organizations usually form groups to enable employees to achieve work-related tasks (Greenberg, 2011). Some of the types of groups formed in an organization include management groups, project groups, advisory groups, and production groups. Groups are also important in an organization for the collection and production of information as well as solving and making decisions.
3. What are the five core job dimensions identified by the job characteristics model? How would management apply the job characteristics model?
The five jobs characteristic include task significance, task variety feedback, and autonomy and skill variety. Additionally, three psychological states are used to determine how employees react to five job characteristics. They include knowledge of the actual outcomes, having an experienced responsibility for the results and experienced meaningfulness. They also affect the five work-related outcomes that are turnover, performance, motivation, satisfaction, and absenteeism (Greenberg, 2011). The job characteristics model can be used by the management to impact both the personal and work outcomes in an organization.
4. What are the stages through which groups pass according to the five-stage model of group formation? Identify and explain each of the development stages.
The five stages of development are storming, performing, forming, and forming. The fifth stage was later identified by Tuckman ten years later that is adjourning. Forming involves the period in which the employee gets oriented and acquainted. In this stage, people are usually looking for authority and leadership. The second stage which is storming is identified by competition and conflicts the personalities of the individual emerge. Team performance is meant to reduce in this stage because much energy is usually invested in unproductive activities (Greenberg, 2011).
