With China exiting the U.S market, American farmers continue to bear the majority of repercussions. China used to be the fourth-largest importer of farm produce from the United States, thus the move compounds problems for farmers dealing with lower crops and exorbitant tariffs imposed.
The U.S. Census in 2018 showed that farm produce exported to china accounted for approximately $5.9 billion (Rooney, 2019). This figure has significantly dropped since the export numbers decreased with tougher tariffs imposed on the sectors of each country. Additionally, the reduced imports lead to lower prices for produce such as coarse grains and soybeans that are significant exports for U.S. farmers. Surplus available in the country, coupled with the growth of substitute farm produce, leads to an overflow of produce in the United States, thus forcing price reductions by farmers to ensure they can sell.
