Team Project Instructions
MGMT 461 Cross Cultural and Global Management
Fall 2019
Overview
Multinational corporations (MNCs) are having difficulty retaining expatriates for their global operations. It is estimated that 10–80% of expatriates sent on foreign assignments return home prematurely. One of the reasons for expatriates’ failure has been cited as the inability of these managers and/or their spouses to adapt to the host-country's culture. As a result, cross-culture training programs provided to employees and their families by MNCs have become crucially important for successful international operations.
Assignment Part I
Students will form teams of no less than 3 and no more than 5 members. Each team will research and develop a presentation for providing a cross cultural briefing for expatriate managers. The home country will be the United States, the host country will be determined through a random draw on the first night of class.
The team will research the cultures of both home and host countries to determine the best informational plan for preparing the expatriate manager and/or family to transition to the new culture. The team will design the cultural briefing plan based on best practices identified by business and human resource professional and supported by current research on the topic of expatriate managerial successful transition.
The briefing should contain the following:

- Business etiquette and workplace norms/rules in this culture
- Power dynamics of the culture in relation to superior and subordinate relations
- Social mores and cultural norms for living respectfully in the local neighborhoods

- Cautions and concerns, if any
Resources
Teams should review the “Cross Training for Expatriates – Erickson Case Study” located in the course documents of the BB classroom as a reference for the main considerations and decisions that need to be made when planning a briefing for expatriate managers. This case study counts as an outside reference. A minimum of 2 references beyond the textbook are required.
Format
1. The briefing should be no less than 5 pages and no more than 7. (not counting cover/reference page)
2. Times Roman 12 pt. font, double spaced.
3. APA format both for the proposal and the works cited.
4. Submitted through BB as a word document.
Assignment Part II
Each team will present their findings to the class in the form of a team presentation to the class. The class will represent the group of mangers that you are briefing on the new country assignment. This presentation should be within 20 to 30 minutes.
Feel free to be creative in this presentation, it is about culture and the topic allows for your team to do something other than a PowerPoint. And if you choose a PowerPoint, be creative with your visuals. If you believe you need more than 30 minutes for the presentation, please edit down to the highlights and keep it to the time allowed. The additional information can be given in the form of a hand out or visual aid.
It is not necessary for everyone to have a speaking role in the presentation, but it is necessary for everyone to participate in the total project. NOTE: You will be grading each other’s contributions to both the paper and presentation which will be worth 15% of your grade.
