Problem Statement
Technology has changed how organizations are approaching various issues, especially in data transmission for security purposes. The number of enterprises offering services and applications is increasing with advancements in technology. This offering of services and applications require extensive support from the IP networks. The Software Defined Network (SDN) is the blueprint of the transport network of applications and monitoring and provisioning of services at the abstraction level. This short paper will attempt to outline some of the problems associated with SDN.
Since its evolution, SDN has been a controversial area with some scholars arguing that the implementation of SDN simplifies network operation and system requirements, thus reducing overall networking costs (Mitchiner & Prasad, 2014). However, on the contrary to these suggestions, other scholars have argued that SDN has added nothing to network operations like the SNMP and other existing protocols have done.
As mentioned before, The Software Defined Network (SDN) is the blueprint of the transport network of applications and monitoring and provisioning of services at the abstraction level. The interface to applications of the existing network architecture is not clean. The figure below demonstrates the relationship between the application and network architecture currently.

From the above diagram, there is a problem that is present in SDN.
For the start, there is no correlation between the applications and network. Due to lack of relationship, it is difficult for enterprises to provide a service guarantee at the network level to the applications. The enterprises may offer network links aimed at reducing network congestion and a drop in packet data within the centers. This approach is unpredictable and can be costly. The bottom line, the application levels do not have knowledge about the underlying physical network condition. This complicates the provision of network services more complex. Additionally, this makes it even difficult for the service providers to expand the intra/inter data center services.
Since the problem affects how network services are offered, most stakeholders are striving to develop proprietary solutions that are aimed at solving the available problems. The solutions are revolving around the interoperability between the storage servers, applications and networking switches/routers. This has been influenced by the call for a standardized protocol from various stakeholders.
