The course has been instrumental in helping me understand myself and those around me better. Through this course, I have come to appreciate the far management discipline has come. I found it interesting how the approach to increase productivity has changed over time. While the classic approach focused on tasks, machines, and the hierarchical authority of managers, it was interesting to learn of the transition to behavioral approaches where the needs and behavior of workers mattered. Furthermore, the concepts of management theory in the 21st century as contributed upon by Michael Porter and Peter Drucker were intriguing. I learned from the history of management that the needs of business and employees keep changing with time. It is safe to assume that the management theory in the future will focus on different needs, which may or may not be related to current concepts.
The course has also equipped me with the knowledge that is applicable in the real-life setting. I have come to learn about the internal and external forces that impact the operations of an organization. With the knowledge gained, I believe I can comfortably assess the different factors that may affect the performance of an organization. I have come to understand the significance of stakeholders, both primary and secondary ones, to the success of the organization. I have gathered that the operations of organizations today are influenced significantly by secondary stakeholders because issues such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability have become important business functions. I have learned that the workplace has become diverse and I have to be considerate of individuals from other cultures because of aspects such as power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and collectivism/individualism dimensions. In short, the course has equipped me with the knowledge that is directly applicable in today’s globalized business environment.
The self-assessment exercises have helped me understand myself more in term of strengths and weaknesses. One of my key strengths is the ability to foster cohesiveness and cooperation.
