There exist a number of reasons that drive juveniles to engage in violent crimes. One of the reasons is the presence of many peer delinquents (Wikstrom & Loeber, 2000). When juveniles associate and interact with delinquent peers, they have an increased chance of engaging in violent crimes. As noted by Wikstrom & Loeber (2000), impulsivity is another reason that may drive juveniles to commit crimes. According to the authors, individual characteristics such as guilt feelings and impulsivity have been linked to juvenile offending. Finally, maltreatment can also drive juveniles into committing serious crimes. Child maltreatment acts such as sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect have been linked delinquent behaviors among juveniles (Thornberry, Huizinga, & Loeber, 2004).
When juveniles commit violent crimes, a possible immediate effect on them is arrest and detention. Therefore, in the short-term, the juvenile offender may face detention. As noted in the case of the 5th grader Jordon Brown, he was charged by police for shooting his father’s girlfriend (Goodman, 2009). The arrest of a juvenile offender is likely to be followed by incarceration or probation. This also means that his or her education is stopped and may lead to loss of ground academically. If placed in detention centers, the offender may interact with other delinquents and his or her behavior further influenced. As seen, there exist a number of short-term effects on the juvenile offender.
A major long-term effect of a juvenile engaging in violent crimes is the continuity of behavior into adulthood. When juveniles commit violent crimes, there is a high chance that they will continue with the behavior into adulthood. Engagement in violent crimes can also mean that the college and career lives of the juveniles are affected. The time spent in incarceration means some academic ground is lost. With the interaction with delinquents in detention centers, the offender may choose to forgo college altogether. Therefore, the juvenile offender may experience undesired long-term effects.
