Police reports are used to report facts concerning an incident (Miller & Whitehead, 2015). It is important to ensure that no personal opinion is given in a police report. The following is a police report detailing the facts surrounding a sexual assault.
On the 1st of May 2018, at around 10:30 p.m., Ms. Jane was walking home along Manhattan Avenue from a meeting with a friend. There were no other people in an alley along the Avenue when two unidentified males sexually assaulted her. Ms. Jane said that one of the men held a knife against her throat and muffled her voice with his hand when she tried to scream for help. He then pushed her against the wall while his partner tore off her clothes. He then forced himself on her but was interrupted by a passerby who called 911. The passerby, Mr. Smith, stated that when he saw the two men attacking the woman, he shouted at them before calling 911 and that is when the assailants run. Further, Mr. Smith stated that the assailants were wearing black hoodies and so, he did not see their faces, but one was approximately 5 foot 9 inches tall, and the other was approximately 6 foot 1 inch tall.
In response to the 911 call, I arrived at the scene at around 11:00 p.m. together with my partner, Officer Parker. While assessing the scene of the crime, we found her assailants used a knife, which Ms. Jane stated. We captured the fingerprints from the knife and shoe prints for use in identifying the two assailants. Further, in her statement, Ms. Jane said that she could identify her assailants in a line-up.
