Have the programs worked to reduce poverty?
The United States has been funding diverse programs for eradicating poverty since 1964 when the American government started the war on poverty. Despite the criticism apportioned by different analysts that this initiative failed to eliminate poverty, Tanner and Hughes (2014) report that the scheme enabled the nation to reduce the number of impoverished Americans to 5.2% from 6.7%. The outcome is that although these individuals remain poor, they have made progress the make their situations less uncomfortable. As a result, the programs have reduced poverty slightly.
What is the end goal- to give people money to help them live day-to-day or help them become self-sufficient? How ethical is this end goal? Explain.
Cato Institute illustrates that the primary goal was to establish opportunity by eradicating poverty-related despair. However, the implementation of the programs demonstrates that the end goal does not align with the concept of making people self-reliant. According to Tanner and Hughes (2014), the U.S. welfare programs fail to empower the poor by concentrating on creating a sense of dependency on regular support from the government. Brady (2019) also agrees that poverty reduction approaches that undermine empowerment risk the moral hazard of leaving people vulnerable to dependency and unable to transition from the poverty group.
