Scenario: You are a middle manager for a retail company. There are 8 employees who report to you, two full-time and six part-time. Employees work various shift schedules including day, evening, and weekend hours. The pay scale is low; at or slightly above minimum wage. There have been issues of lack of motivation and productivity in your department lately. Some of the issues include employee tardiness, negative attitudes, and overall decreased production. As a manager you want to decrease negative attitudes and increase productivity. Address these points in your paper.
A. Summarize the four positions of power.
B. Choose two of the power techniques. How would you use them to positively influence motivation and productivity for your team?
C. How would you balance politics with influencing employees?
D. Summarize how you would implement such change while maintaining the overall vision of the department.

In business management, there are several positions of power that help maintain and increase the productivity of any particular enterprise. Some of the positions of power include the Coercive power which imposing threats of force to the individuals to gain compliance. It is based on forcing people to execute duties that he or she might not be interested in. The kind of forces that could be used may include social, political, emotional, physical as well as economic means. Reward force is a common type of power that is based on motivating individuals by providing them with tangibles, emotional, social rewards for doing what is expected of them. This kind of power is useful in management because it increases working efficiency among the workers thus increasing productivity. Expert power is based on the individual's capability, special skills, and experience. It is normally demonstrated by actions, reputations as well as credentials certifying expertise (Taucean et al., 2016). Legitimate power is another power position in leadership. The leaders can either be selected, elected or appointed to a position of authority. The leaders with legitimate power can punish and reward individuals depending on their performance of certain duties (Taucean et al., 2016).
Reward force is one of the effective power techniques that can be motivating and increase the productivity of the business. First and foremost, I’ll ensure employees know how to earn rewards. This will motivate them and create competition thus higher productivity.
