Over the last few months, there has a global reckoning over the police killing and racial injustice following the death of a 46-year-old African American man on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Floyd was killed by one of the police officers, Derrick Chauvin, who had his knee on the victim’s neck. After the murder, there were protests in many cities in the United States and other pasts around the world (BBC News, 2020). It is alleged that Floyd attempted to use a fake $20 bill. The actions taken against the four officers in the case were fired although Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder and other serious charges. The others were charged for participating in the manslaughter and murder. Floyd is only one of the many blacks who have been killed by the officers. Others include Breonna Taylor, 26, in Louisville Kentucky, Ataliana Jefferson, 28, in Miami Florida, Aura Rosser, 40, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Stephon Clark, 22, in Sacramento, California (Chughtai, 2020). As these events continue to be witnessed in the United States, there are ethical issues over the use of lethal force among the military and the police against alleged criminals.
I have indirectly been involved in condemning the unethical event of Floyd’s murder, which has resulted in the granting of justice to the family and close friends of the slain victim. However, there are debates over the ethics of defensive harm with critics arguing in support over the use of individual self-defense and lethal force by security officials such as police officers and soldiers.
