It is in the spirit of facilitating the achievement of the organization’s full potential that most entities resort to the use of managers as coaches to enhance organizational development and maintenance of positive outcomes for both the individual members of the organization and the organization in its entirety. Manager as a coach (MAC) refers to the manager’s enhancement of their direct reports to becoming more involved and engaged in the daily activities of the organization and instilling a sense of belonging and ownership of the organizational goals and activities. The managers go beyond their supervisory role and coach their subordinates to assume ownership of the organizations they work for and drive its development agenda by taking responsibility for the achievement of the organizational goals CITATION McC13 \l 1033 (McCarthy, 2013). The managers playing the role of a coach in an organization engage in meaningful conversations and communications with their direct reports or members of their assigned teams with the aim promoting organizational development in all the aspects of the organization through impacting positive emotions and attitudes of the employees.
The role is more appropriate for the manager as they are in direct contact with the individual on their respective teams. Additionally, it is the managers who have a better understanding of their team members’ competencies and areas of weaknesses or opportunities for growth CITATION McC13 \l 1033 (McCarthy, 2013). Moreover, it is the managers who determine the rewarding of the employees or punitive measures to be taken for incompetence and thus better suited in coaching their team members to live up to the expectations of their roles in the organization.
