Introduction
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted normal business operations and led businesses to restructure and adopt new ways of running operations. While some professions were negatively affected and employees lost their jobs indefinitely, the demand for other professions increased, leading to more employment opportunities. Most people began to work from home as the government implemented lockdowns to minimize physical interactions.
U.S. Labor Trends
The COVID-19 pandemic caused major changes in the U.S. labor force. Businesses and companies suspended their operations temporarily in 2020, leading to job loss. Most people remained unemployed as they stayed at home during the lockdown. The pandemic drove people to retire early, with the retirement rate growing by 2.2 % between 2019 and 2021. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) surveyed the labor force on a sample that included both men and women born between 1980 and 1984 (NLSY97). During the first year of the pandemic, more men worked (90%) compared to women (83%) (Auginbaugh & Rothstein, 2022). People with a bachelor’s degree or higher were likelier to work than those with a high school diploma or less. During the pandemic, working from home became more popular. The study showed that more women continued to work from home compared to men post-pandemic. Some switched jobs for better and more flexible terms.
Legal Industry Hiring During Pandemic
The demand for legal services escalated during the pandemic as businesses were restructuring. COVID-19 disrupted the traditional ways of running companies, forcing them to adopt new norms. Due to the abrupt changes, organizations needed legal professionals to guide them in handling legal issues caused by the pandemic. More lawyers and attorneys got employed to meet the demand for legal professionals. Some issues that required legal involvement include laying off workers, renegotiating leases for workspaces, enforcing vaccination for workers, and restructuring the working terms and conditions for employees working from home.
Furthermore, the legal professionals experienced working flexibility as law firms operated virtually. Working from home is a continuing practice as firms allow workers to partially or fully work remotely. Hiring legal professionals is likely permanent as firms still need them post-pandemic. In addition, the business and economic world is rapidly evolving, thus increasing the demand for legal professionals.
