Introduction
Leadership can be defined as the action of steering a group of people towards a pre-set goal or objectives. It is the state of being a leader. Elements of leadership are the qualities that make one a good leader. On the other hand, management is the process of controlling or dealing with people or things. Sometimes, a leader can be a manager but the converse is not necessarily true.
Examine your individual essential elements of leadership and management
As a leader, I am a good communicator (Algahtani, 2014). This means that I am able to keep in touch with my team using different media such as face-to-face communication, e-mails, and telephone calls among others. Through communication, I am able to address any issues that may arise and I also give directions on what to do and when. Without proper communication, I would not be in the position to lead my team towards the desired goal. In order to lead my team effectively, I am also confident. As the leader I have to have confidence in myself and in my team that we are up to the task. As the backbone of my team, I need to have confidence so that I can support my team in good and bad times.
In any course, there are challenges that arise. As a leader, I have prompt problem solving skills so that if any problem arises, I am able to organize my team and overcome the challenge. Without these problem solving skills, it could be difficult for me to lead as my team members are always looking up to me for directions. As a leader, I am also able to delegate duties (Algahtani, 2014). It is upon me to know the abilities, strengths and weaknesses of my team members so that I can allocate duties appropriately for maximum productivity. Otherwise, assigning roles to people who are not up to the task can render the whole team a failure.
