Introduction
When somebody mentions the term leadership, the subconscious mind assumes that one is fully aware of the term without really assessing the true meaning of it and the context. The term leadership is subject to different definitions and understanding with varying groups of people, a perfect explanation for the inconsistent leadership approaches. Nonetheless, leaders have features that define them, including visionary, empathetic, holistic, humane, and importantly, embrace diversity (Western, 2019). Such attributes questions the character of some 'leaders' who have dominated history like Hitler, who was utterly inhuman. In the contemporary era of the corporate world, leadership goes beyond leading the masses but rather, making critical decisions that have an immediate impact and affect future viability. The complexities that come along with leadership roles necessitates the establishment of a filtering criterion for those unfit to hold a leadership position. A similar criterion for determining their effectiveness in carryout out the leadership role bestowed upon them is mandatory. The attributes required of a leader changes with time, and there is a need for the criteria to be agile as well.
Effective Leadership Assessment Criteria
Every person at some point in time has that one person whom they admire in regards to leadership style. The decision to look up to someone's leadership style might be made by evaluating basic things like how they make decisions, overall output, or even one's reputation. These might seem straightforward and acceptable to many, but they also pose some challenges. One obvious shortcoming is that the criteria are only possible after the occurrence of an event. Also, these metrics are influenced significantly by other external factors like the time duration. Besides, focusing on financial milestones and disappointments as an evaluation metric represents a fraction of the numerous variables that contribute to the effectiveness of a leader.
The performance of an organization or an enterprise wholly depends on the individual performance of the stakeholders. Leaders, therefore, have a role to play in influencing the performance of every individual that eventually translates to collective performance. Influence, on the other hand, thus becomes an additional criterion. When the underdogs in an organization express commitment and satisfaction in their daily routine, it means that their leader is an excellent motivator with strong organizational and interpersonal skills that are worthy of emulation. Thus, the level of commitment and satisfaction of those working beneath a leader is another indicator of effective leadership.
