The concept of leadership development is demonstrated by the process of teaching and preparing someone for him to be an effective leader of a group. Through the process, the focus will be on enhancing his abilities and expanding his knowledge, as well as his interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, as these are vital with the role he is about to take (Avolio et al., n.d.). The end goal of leadership development is for that specific person to have most, or if possible, all the qualities and skills of an effective leader, who will be respected and followed by everyone. As a leader, he must view himself as adequate in solving problems and issues, and in exercising control over his followers. He must be confident enough to give orders and to make decisions for the betterment of the whole organization. Moreover, a leader should be able to lead tasks and make firm decisions without always having to depend on someone. He should be able to influence other people to do something or to accomplish a task and can direct the whole organization in such a way that makes it more united and orderly. Lastly, a leader must be able to create a positive impact on his followers and the organization. This can be demonstrated in his ability to inspire others to achieve a common goal, which is not only for the benefit of some but for everyone in the group. In other words, the members work with shared efforts towards a shared vision to achieve shared success (Houghton, 2010).
