Introduction
The company chosen for this study is ABC Sports. ABC Company was established in 2009 by Alexander Pete in Midtown, Atlanta. The main goal then was to sell low-cost quality athletic shoes to Americans to break some companies’ domination of the local industry. Currently, the company produces as well as sells athletic shoes every market pricing worldwide. However, 50% of the company’s sales come from the sale of sports equipment and athletic apparel. The company uses both traditional and new distribution channels to target its main market areas namely the US, Europe and Asia. The company uses more than 10,000 retailers, factory stores, stores, and websites to sell leisure and sports products. The company controls 30% of the world market share and has attained it via aggressive marketing, innovation and quality production. The company has about 10,700 employees.
In the current competitive world, the businesses face significant challenges concerning commitment, engagement, culture, recruitment as well as retention of employees. The last six months has seen the ABC Sports face challenges of high absenteeism and attrition rates. This paper highlights the absenteeism and attrition challenges facing ABC and the measures the company can implement as action plans to address them.
Absenteeism
Absenteeism is when employees fail to go to work either voluntarily or involuntarily. Though companies become impacted by absenteeism for diverse reasons, the impact of increased absenteeism potentially costs and disrupts operations (Bankert, Coberley, Pope & Wells, 2015). As the SVP of HRM, I have established that indirect and direct costs of absenteeism totals 22.1% of ABC’s payroll and unplanned absenteeism has the highest general cost.
I established many factors that cause employee absenteeism like the decision process, personality, productivity, job satisfaction, family issues, job demands, organizational challenges, leadership, socio-demographic factors, workplace behaviors and health associated illnesses (Ahn, Lee & Steel, 2013).
Owing to the growing changes as well as uncertainty in the world of business, ABC requires its employees to be proactive for it to realize its strategic goals (Shin & Kim, 2015). Therefore, an action plan must be devised to address the cause of absenteeism for the company to realize its strategic objectives.
High Turnover
Another challenges ABC significantly faces is high turnover rates. Numerous issues occur in the workplace thereby reducing motivation of employees which in turn causes high employee turnover rates in the company. The issues that contribute to the low motivation for employees include adverse criticisms, badmouthing, and inability to enjoy work, poor interpersonal relationship with colleagues, and poor wages as well as benefits (Aquinas, 2006). These factors impact the interpersonal relationship among employees and management. Therefore, a culture that restricts the employees in enjoying their duties greatly demotivates them.
