Globalization is the process in which individuals, organizations and even countries enhance their interactions and integrations on a worldwide scale. In the context of unions and business, globalization has made it easier for companies in the US to ship out their manufacturing to developing countries where they can pay workers lower wages (Vachon & Wallace, 2013). It has also made it easier for immigrants to move into the US to do the same jobs as unionized workers but at lower wages. The impact of globalization is therefor to weaken the bargaining power of unions because when manufacturing is transferred to other countries, many workers are laid off, leading to lower union membership. This also forces unions to accept whatever pay the companies will offer them lest the few workers they still have as members will lose their jobs (Munck, 2010).
