Essay Prompt Instructions
Aliens from another planet want to visit the Earth in order to trade for some of our unique cultural products. Their homeworld prizes beer and and sorghum-based alcohol, so the aliens arrange for one space shuttle to visit San Diego, California and another space shuttle to visit Maotai, China. The team of aliens on board each of the spaceships has spent years in space mastering the local language and cultural traditions for their respective destinations.
The aliens are planning to land in San Diego and Maotai tomorrow. Unfortunately, their space shuttles unexpectedly crash into a Tesla Roadster outside of Earth’s orbit, which their advanced telescopes had not previously detected as a risk. As a result, the two shuttles are forced to swap their landing approaches, with the China-trained team sent to San Diego, California and the U.S.-trained team sent to Maotai, China.
In a state of panic, the aliens trade a few of their harvested bitcoins and use the proceeds to hire YOU as a cross-cultural consultant. After getting over your initial surprise and some tough negotiating, you agree to provide advice to ONE of the two teams (your choice either Maotai or San Diego) on what they should know and how they should best communicate with the earthlings at their landing site. [In other words: Pick China or the U.S. (San Diego) – don’t answer for both!]
Please construct a well-written, three-page, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1” margins essay that incorporates the following:
• How would you describe life in Southern California or China using Hofstede’s Dimensions of culture? (note: you are not expected to explain any regional differences in Chinese culture – focus on national-level orientations).
• What is the time orientation of the people who live in San Diego/Maotai, according to Hall’s theory (monochronic/polychronic)?
• What are the communication preferences of the people who live in San Diego/Maotai, according to Hall’s theory (high context/low context)?
• How would you go about making a trade arrangement for craft beer/ sorghum-based alcohol with the people in San Diego/Maotai?
• How would you recommend avoiding any communication blunders/mistakes (“faux pas”) in San Diego/Maotai?

Global Business Management
Cultures across the globe are increasingly interconnected, and business has been globalized. In this regard, there is a need to possess the ability to work with different people with different cultural backgrounds. Their cultural values mainly influence people’s thinking patterns. In the case presented, there is a need for certain mechanisms that need to be applied to understand the similarities and differences that the aliens will encounter in San Diego after their China-bound mission is aborted. Cultural dimensions are utilized to merge the differences and reduce the impact on the group’s adopted culture. The dimensions of culture can be used to determine the impact of the San Diego culture on the China-trained team.
Life in South Carolina
The dimensions illustrate the impact of ingrained cultural values on the people. The values cherished by the people affect their behavior and how they perceive certain features of a business. With an understanding of these, the San Diego alien team can be able to reevaluate their approach and fulfill their mission of trading for some of the unique cultural products. South Carolina people are strongly religious, with a large percentage being Christians. The region is also well-known for its Southern American culture; it is a very conservative region. The main language spoken by the people in the region is English, with a very strong Southern American dialect. With their highly conservative culture, people in South Carolina are likely to avoid uncertainty. The people also value collectivism, with the strong Christian values and Southern American culture ingrained in them. Therefore, life in South Carolina is collective and people work together. There is also long-term orientation as people are more inclined towards attaining virtue (B2U, 2017).
Time Orientation of People in San Diego
Hall conceptualized culture based on the differences between people, time, language, and space. The polychronic and monochronic terms are used to explain how people understand and utilize time. It is also explaining how time influences people’s attitudes, communication, and behaviors. Polychromatic entails the preference for doing diverse things at the same time. On the other hand, monochromatic refers to the preference of individuals to complete tasks one-by-one. The time orientation of the people in San Diego is polychromatic because they are very conservative, prioritizing relationships over tasks. They also do not consider time commitments binding and always have a flexible approach to time. The promptness to certain issues is based on relationships (MacLachlan, 2010).
