The event industry involves a broad scope of business and responsibilities. It can range from a one-man team to a corporate planning business with a high number of employees and skills required. The broadness of scope also indicates many skills and talents to get a specific target job done. It is also important to note when in the event industry to know the target market and scope of one’s own abilities to make sure that the services that will be offered will be fit to the likes and demands of the event and the clients. The feedback of the clients is especially important in this kind of business to make sure that referrals, word of mouth comments, and other promotions would be positive for the continuous improvement and growth of the industry, but constructive criticism is also welcomed for innovation and further improvement in services for the future clients and events.
Given the chance to be employed in the event industry, I would like to be a catering manager. A catering manager is in charge of the planning, executing, and supervising of catering operations and services. This job requires being part of a team of chefs, waiters, and catering assistants. Catering managers have various options as to where to focus their services, some options may be in restaurants, resorts, hotels or one-day catering events such as corporate meetings, weddings, christenings, and birthdays. In the execution of the event, a vital part is giving high quality food and services that is fit within the available budget of the clients, in order to achieve high customer satisfaction.
The skills that are needed requires a lot of leadership and management skills to be able to handle employees, as well as coordinate with the suppliers, as well as the client. All the areas involved with the food during the event including menu consultation with clients and the chefs, hygiene protocols, health and safety rules and regulations, quality checking of the services and products, staff hiring and training, and event budget planning.
