Many companies are striving for competitive advantage by looking for cost saving strategies to minimize their operating costs. Optimal supply chain collaboration requires supporting technology infrastructure that synchronizes information across the organization . Innovative companies look for appropriate areas of their businesses to drive their performance through the value chain for both the supply and demand.
Strategic supply management can create value for a company; business professionals are aware of the importance of creating value, especially by using innovative technology like the e-procurement. Manufacturing and distribution companies in various industries are constantly seeking to create a high profile supply management to boost the company's visibility (Wisner, Tan & Leong, 2014). The supply chain is a process that involves a network that provides distribution options for raw and finished materials to reach the end customers using different distribution channels (Wisner, Tan & Leong, 2014).
The process for enabling goods and services to reach the end user is known as the e-procurement. E-procurement is more than just an online platform for transactions; it is a process that offers an organized channel that is open for communication with potential suppliers (Wisner, Tan & Leong, 2014). One of the common procurement systems used by large companies is the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system (Wisner, Tan & Leong, 2014).
Every company sees it as the solution to all the company's problems. With the changing customer expectations, companies are under pressure to change their operations; this includes streamlining most of the operation processes starting from purchasing of raw materials to delivering the finished products (Tsai et al., 2015). Therefore, the system has a major impact on business. The ERP is one of the systems that increase innovation; companies have the chance to increase its competitiveness. An ERP system is a comprehensive system that integrates all operations, enabling the company update its resources across different departments (Tsai et al., 2015).
For instance, ICA Sweden is among the middle size businesses selling organic food and is among many companies using ERP system to stay competitive. ICA Sweden operates more than 1,000 stores in and out of Sweden. Most of the stores operated by independent parties making it easy for every store to tailor its concept in line with the local demands (Stadtler, 2015). With many people turning to organic foods, the grocery industry is widely dominated by ICA, but with increased demand, the company is facing challenges in its supply chain. Hence, the company adopted an ERP system(Stadtler, 2015).
The ERP system was adopted to minimize the overall operating costs through an integrated process (Stadtler, 2015).
