Introduction
How different processes and entities of an organization could be brought together in an organized manner remained a misery up until the mid 20th century when computers found its way into the business arena. Businesses started embracing the use of computers and other telecommunication systems, with more emphasis on matters relating to accounting. As more and more complex operations of the various organization were being automated, it led to the emergence of the popular term that is commonly associated to process automation in a business setting, information systems(IS). An information system is a technical term used to refer to the interrelation of processes and information that are crucial to the management and decision making of an organization (Thatcher et al., 2018). The introduction of information systems was a major milestone in the management process until a major flaw was identified with the use of independent IS to serve different purposes within a single organization. In the recent past, various organizations have transitioned into a more unified model of information that is technically termed as an Enterprise System.
What an Enterprise System Is
An Enterprise System (ES) refers to a centralized information system that brings together the independent processes and entities in an organization into a single unit for the organization to realize a seamless flow of information and eventually make informed decisions and utilize resources efficiently (Giachetti, 2016). Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, Supply Chain Management Systems (SCM), and Customer Relationship Management Systems (CRM) are a few of the well known ES systems available today. A typical enterprise is composed of various business processes ranging from manufacturing, production, supply, sales, human resource, accounting, customers, and the ES functions to integrate the different processes into one functional unit.
How It Works
Before embarking on the implementation of an ES, an organization ought to carry out a preliminary study to find out the business processes that are capable of being automated, bearing in mind that ES is a software solution. Failure to do a preliminary study poses the risk of future system failures and does not give room for scalability. At the core of an ES is a database used to store information from the various processes of an enterprise. A centralized database management system is the most common among ES solutions. ES program modules are then used to channel all the relevant information from the various business processes that are then stored in the database to be used for a different purpose. The output from one process module could be used as the input for the other, and this makes operations such as data analysis possible. Vendors of ES have designed them in such a way that any enterprise, be it small or, large can easily customize the software to conform with its business model. Besides, any business venture of this era ought to structure its business in a manner that is manageable using a software solution to reap the fruit of ES readily available in the market.
