Introduction
In work organizations, the role to ensure that employees are retained is based on the strategies applied in Human Resource Management. Human resource managers are expected to identify retention strategies that are effective and efficient. People are important in every business because they contribute largely towards the failure or success of the entity for which they work (Balakrishnan, Masthan & Chandra, 2013). Therefore, one of the strategies that managers can adopt to ensure that they retain most of their workers is employee engagement. This strategy, when applied, leads to commitment and psychological attachment of workers to a company that translates into high retention.
Employee Engagement
Employee engagement gives an employee a deep level of work commitment toward the values of the company. An employee will then physically, cognitively and emotionally work together with the team members to enhance and improve performance within the organization (Chandel, n.d.). However, an employee can only be fully engaged at a given workplace when he/she has good work experience and treated right way to have a psychological attachment. Certainly, this engagement is birthed through authentic leaders who cultivate and nurture a culture of engagement. Besides, this is done by forming a solid relationship between the employee and employer. The leader then ought to balance moral perspectives with interpersonal relationships which create a healthy environment to work in.
  Employee engagement is encouraged in companies through leaders giving employees meaningful and dedicated work. Admittedly, this helps them to realize how valuable they are within the organization and increases their participation. Leaders should also give rewards and recognition to engage workers (Osborne & Hammoud, 2017). Recognition is critical to the operation and culture in the workplace because it is a form of feedback for an employee to know whether they are doing a good job. In regards to this, the most common reward for work is monetary payment, but awards such as ‘employee of the month’ and health insurance are also very much helpful in attaining employee engagement.
