In situations to deal with calamities such as hurricanes, there must be an existing formulated method of dealing with emergencies. Hurricanes arise from seismic forces, originating from the core of the earth. Hurricanes Katrina was associated with risks such as heavy rainfall and inland flooding, property destruction, and loss of lives. Affected populations developed mental health problems due to traumatic experiences caused. Hurricane Katrina caused 1800 deaths. It is one of the factors that contributed to socioeconomic and racial inequalities in the state. A mitigation strategy is necessary, especially in situations to reduce hurricane effects. States indicated responsibility in the circumstances to deal with the hurricanes like installing permanent shutters, ensuring proper securing of soffits and better surroundings, proper drainage to offload the floods, among others.
One of the risks identified with Hurricane Katrina is heavy rainfall and inland flooding. Tropical cyclones typically produce extensive and torrential rain that exceeds six inches level. Flooding is a significant threat associated with tropical cyclones, especially to people living in the coastal region (Cook et al. 2013: Fagel, 2011). The size and speed of storms cause heavy rainfall. The rainfall contributed to flooding on roads and raise of water levels in rivers and other close water bodies. Individuals have been profoundly affected by the hurricane while approaching flooded areas. Most are advised to avoid overflooded areas to prevent drowning.
