Introduction
Taking time to evaluate one's leadership skills and effectiveness is an important practice that should be embraced but leaders. Most pressing issues concerning leadership arise daily, and self-awareness is the vital tool towards improved leadership effectiveness and individual performance. As a leader, being conscious of your traits, skills, and abilities pushes you to raise your personal effectiveness bars and thus improves productivity (Burns, 2012).
Gaps in leadership skills
According to Miller et.al (2017) ,gaps in leadership capabilities are on the rise, and the primary causes of such gaps are the lack of adequate training and education. When evaluating a firm's required skills and leadership traits, most companies outline the job responsibilities, and failure to deliver creates a leadership gap. The changes in the occupation’s nature and poor organizational procedures when selecting new talent is also a major cause of leadership gaps.
There exists a leadership skills gap in much of today’s corporate world. This gap is as a result of a scarcity in both the skills and talent needed for such institutions. Even while this is the case, there seems to be a laxity from the companies when it comes to rectification or fixing the problem. Almost half of the corporate world places little to no effort in developing the leadership skillset needed for them,despite acknowledging the need(Cushing,2014). This is bound to be a problem that would only grow worse in future.
Personal leadership skills and traits
The leader traits should match that of his followers and the environment to boost success. The strong interaction between the leaders and the followers encourage healthy working relationships which in turn but leadership effectiveness. The individual should understand that the situational factor and the followers' traits impacts on leaderships and determines its success or failure (Yoder-Wise & Kowalsk, 2010).
Interaction between leadership, followership, and situational characteristics
Various aspects such as the social situations and education systems shape one into becoming an effective leader. It is vital that a leader interacts with the followers and the environment as failure to do results to interactional challenges which affect the institutions negatively.
Interactional challenges related to the practice of leadership
Interactions are more like relationships. Relationships are determined by the roles thereof. Even though the roles might be individual, it is inevitable for one to relate to another for a certain task to be done accordingly. As a result, the interactional challenges emanating from this tend to be out of human behavior. These include lack of reward or recognition, miscommunication and personal conflicts. Burns (2012) asserts that the inability to interact with the followers could lead to reduced morale, reduced period of stay and low productivity which in the long affects the general performance.
