Leadership and Competitive Advantage in Contemporary Organizations

The goal of financial sustainability for nonprofits is to maintain or expand services within the organization while developing resilience to occasional economic shocks in the short-term (e.g., short-term loss of program funds, monthly variability in donations). Non-profit organizations gain most of their financial contributions from charitable contributions or tax appropriations. The efficiency and effectiveness of non-profit organizations is often measured by the accomplishment of their social mission, which is their strategic goal. Non-profit organizations look at their profitability and the impact made on their social mission (Rand Corporation, 2012)
 The servant leadership model can make organizations competitive in many ways. Employees that work for organizations that are people-centric “have high emotional engagement, loyalty, and productivity, and outperform the competition on a daily basis over long periods of time” (Hess, 2013). Servant leaders surround themselves with good people and motivate them to achieve greatness. They have the ability to create a vision that is vivid and looks at the big picture, scoping out problems before they arise (Gill, 2015).
