Problems and challenges
The success of City Year, an American non-profit organisation has weathered many storms – ranging from lack of funding, expansion challenges and governmental interferences, to name a few. Over the years, the City Year has been dedicated to recruiting young adults to public service. Kanter & Weber (2011) presents how strategic changes focused on converting the organisation to a national service brings growth challenges. For example, the collaboration with new partners brought new transition challenges with City Year systems and practices being unable to handle the changes with ease –due to inadequate systems and practices. Similarly, funding and limited resources are cited as a major problem in this case. It is for this reason, external forces – the financers have fully interfered the organisation operations. In a nutshell, lack of a solid and effective strategic planning and funding has been the significant impediment.
Approaches that can be utilized
To improve strategic planning and positioning, the organisation can utilize different models including, Blue ocean strategy, gap planning, SWOT analysis, strategy map, porters five forces, balanced scorecard and VRIO framework and Pestle model. These models and frameworks offer a unique process through which City Year can improve their strategic planning and enhance a smooth transition. The management can leverage these tools to increase the organisation value. For example, the SWOT analysis tool helps City Year to analyze the strength, weakness, opportunity and threats that it may face in its operation. Alternatively, using appropriate funding sources can be an effective plan to reduce dependency and focus on the shareholder's goals and objectives.
