Background
Leadership approaches propose that leaders use different strategies to motivate followers and get results. There are “three major leadership styles: transformational (democratic/participative), transactional (authoritarian/directive) and laissez-faire” (Ekstrand et al., 2018). Team members tend to improve their performance when there are effective leaders and leadership approaches.
There are three articles that address three leadership approaches, the transformational leadership, transactional leadership and laissez-faire leadership.
Transformational leadership
Transformational leadership seeks to bring about change based on employee motivation, reflection, and empowering individuals to make decisions as they are inspired to achieve remarkable results. Dimas, Rebelo, Lourenço & Pessoa (2018) focused on how team resilience meditates the relationship between transformational leadership and team effectiveness. Effective team leadership and resilience should not be ignored in transformational leadership to improve team performance and effectiveness (Dimas et al., 2018). The level of morale and motivation as well as the needs, expectations of the workers are essential to improve team performance under the transformational leadership approach style.
Transformational leadership encourages the creative participation of workers in teams where their contributions are celebrated and rewarded. The leader invites team members participate in the organization, to contribute their opinions and ideas to improve the processes and achieve results. Additionally, the transformational leader encourages and rewards creativity among his followers, as this helps to achieve changes. This approach is likely to achieve better results as the leader believes in the capabilities of each of his team members and lets them know about this, while also guiding them. Thus, transformational leadership is a participative and empowering leadership style that promotes greater long-term commitment in highly motivated workers and followers.
Transactional leadership approach
Transactional leadership is associated with influencing change among employees to improve productivity including reward and punishment to achieve this. Saravo, Netzel & Kiesewetter (2017) highlight the importance of transactional and transformational leadership skills and training among clinical leaders who often work with multi-professional teams. Leadership training focusing on transactional and transformational leadership improves leadership skills and performance in clinical residents. Empowering leaders and facilitating commitment is more common in transformational leadership, but the transformational leadership approach motivates employees as they are rewarded based on their performance.
