Regardless of a company’s investment in statistics, none has been able to predict the future with 100% certainty. Risks and threats are all around and every business is bound to encounter an unforeseen event. Businesses with wise leaders usually prepare for these unforeseen events and therefore, suffer little damage. These preparations are made possible by several plans that help said businesses to remain afloat and eventually recover. They include a disaster recovery plan, a contingency plan, and a business continuity plan.
A disaster recovery plan is one that seeks to restore or recover crucial support systems. These mainly include IT assets, hardware, and communications. Its main goal is to ensure that the normal functioning of critical business processes will continue regardless of an uncertain event. It could be an attack or a failure of infrastructure or a technical hitch. Whatever the event, a disaster recovery plan ensures that vital support systems are restored and that business downtime is minimized.
A business continuity plan, on the other hand, is wider in scope than a disaster recovery plan. These two are related to each other in that the disaster recovery plan is a component of the business continuity plan. A business continuity plan ensures that a business is able to continue operating even when disaster strikes. For example, in the event that employees are not able to access their workplaces, a business continuity plan would ensure that critical processes or simply business processes are still operational even remotely.
