Leadership is a unique trait that some people are born with, while others learn from notable historical leaders. One such leader is the biblical Peter, who successful influenced people to change their evil ways and accept the God’s righteousness. As espoused in 1 Peter 5:2-3, a careful analysis of his leadership skills emphasizes the significance of followership or discipleship. Northouse (2018) consents that followership is an essential aspect of the leadership process. Leaders should not only lead but should also focus on serving their followers.
One of the defining characteristics of leadership that Peter exhibits is humility. In 1 Peter 5:2-3, the prophet is addressing the elders of the church and, in his sermon, tells them that leaders should not seek to be domineering over those that they are in charge of but should serve as examples. At the workplace, leaders should focus on serving others rather than being served. When employees see leaders serving, they tend to emulate them, transforming their workplace to a better working environment.
Peter also advises the elders to be shepherds of their people and exercise oversight roles. While leaders are supposed to serve as examples, they should also serve oversight roles. They should be able to monitor the performance of each employee and advise them accordingly. Every employee has his strengths and weaknesses.
