We will look at the interrelationship of strategy and the balanced scorecard approach in more depth later on in this course. A balanced scorecard helps in strategic planning and overall management; this system is widely used by many institutions to align and execute business activities based on the organization’s vision (MacKay, 2004). Being a good management tool, a balanced scorecard offers a framework that guides performance measurement assisting planners to identify what should be improved to enhance productivity (MacKay, 2004).
The majority of the framework is derived from cause and effect relationship of both financial and non-financial indicators generated from the organization strategic plans (MacKay, 2004). Based on the case study, Cattaraugus rehabilitation center like other organizations have been involved in strategic planning by hiring consultants. In the process, the organization appointed a director to be in charge of the strategic planning process. The organization adopted the balanced scorecard approach as an effective tool to move the organization forward. By implementing the balance car approached by the Rehabilitation Center to reflect its mission and vision.
Analysis
The Cattaraugus rehabilitation center’s mission is to improve the quality of life of those with disability. The center envisions a process where its target population will receive accessible and comprehensive services. Part of its mission is to enable them to achieve maximum independence; hence, their services emphasize on quality towards its target population (Martello, Watson & Fischer, 2016). The Cattaraugus Rehabilitation Center aims at being the leader in offering desirable services that are accessible to those with disability. Much emphasis is on independence, quality of life, choice, natural environment and making valuable contributions in the community (Martello, Watson & Fischer, 2016).
Kaplan and Norton's idea of a balanced scorecard involves four quadrants with each having objective and specific measures that are distinct and are designed to oversee the whole of the organization's operation. These include the past, current, future, both internal and external (Murby & Gould, 2005). The quadrants are divided into financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth quadrants. The rehabilitation center strategic objective can be described using these four perspectives (Murby & Gould, 2005).
The financial and consumer quadrants need to be emphasized since the center needs constant funding it is important to look at the internal process to understand how effective the organization can reduce its expenses (Murby & Gould, 2005). From a consumer perspective, the focus is on customer satisfaction; the rehabilitation center needs to adopt strategies that will improve quality services, hence improving patient health outcomes (Murby & Gould, 2005).
The center needs to offer high levels of customer satisfaction, reviewing customers unmet needs to close the many health inequalities within the community they serve (Martello, Watson & Fisch...
