Authentic leadership is defined as a transparent and genuine leadership style in which the leader can foster self-awareness and development on the followers because of their self-awareness and truthfulness (Lyubovnikova, Legood, Turner, & Mamakouka, 2015). Leaders who use this style are true to who they are and as such, they can inspire trust and positivity in their followers.
An authentic leader leads their followers by example. Several authentic leadership practices would have a positive impact on the workplace. The first practice is self-awareness, which helps the leader to show their followers how they perceive or understand the world (Lyubovnikova et al., 2015). As stated in the definition, authentic leaders can inspire trust because they are true to who they are. Being true to self comes from being self-aware. For example, a leader can instill trust and self-development of their followers if he/she is aware of his/her values, strengths and weaknesses. Demonstrating these values, weaknesses, and strengths to followers can be an effective tool for building trust. Such a practice also enables followers to develop positive emotions which are essential in enhancing creativity and organizational performance (Mickahail & Aquino, 2019). Followers need to trust their leaders so that they can share not only ideas but also admit to making mistakes in the course of their work. This creates a positive working environment.
The second practice that can influence the workplace positively is referred to as balanced processing. This involves receiving and examining all relevant information before making a decision, especially when facing opposition from other people in the organization (Lyubovnikova et al., 2015).
