The heart of a Woman by Georgia Douglas Johnson
This poem tries to show the freedom which women desire for and the rights which they are being denied. The speaker of this poem tries to portray how a woman’s heart can aviate from her home like a lone bird. The speaker also attempts to relate a woman’s heart to that of a flying bird which flies over different places which call her home but eventually returns. A woman is brought back to the reality of her life in the second stanza of this poem. She is locked up from her freedom, but this only ensures her safety, but this does not seem to be a good thing to the woman as she had a free life contrary to thisCITATION Geo19 \l 1033 (Fauset, 1919). The woman is seen enclosed in a cage in the last line of this stanza. This cage is referred to as “shelter” because it prevents the woman from any harm but in the real sense this structure harms her.
Georgia Douglas Johnson expresses double consciousness in the poem in the part where she describes Cage as the only place where the woman finds freedom, but later describes it as a place where the woman does not have peace, the cage harms her. The theme of pain and oppressiveness is seen in this poem. The speaker is aware of the pain traditional women went through. In the second line of the second stanza, we see the woman trying to forget all that she had dreamed of, in the third line of this stanza she enters into a cage where she suffers.CITATION Geo19 \l 1033 (Fauset, 1919)
The section mentioned above show that woman had not freedom. Even in this pain, a woman is seen covering it up from her face”… woman with a burning flame covers it for years…” although deep in her she is suffering. The woman uses all means to search for peace and even escapes her home, but whenever she goes, she seems not to find peace which makes her return to her home.CITATION Geo19 \l 1033 (Fauset, 1919) This brings up another theme of love. Even if the woman does not find freedom in her home, she sees it as the best place to be because it is only there where she loves. This poem encourages me to fight for the freedom of women as they suffer a lot in silence.
