However, the more precise definition is that the vendor responds to a specification for goods and services while the subcontractor is a part of the solution to a project and must understand the project's goals to some extent. To do their best job at the most effective cost, subcontractors may need more information than you initially provide them with. Yet they are discouraged or forbidden to talk to the customer to get clarification. When this happens, beware of your own tendencies to decide exactly what the subcontractor needs to know. You can be a liaison, but you will also need to spend additional effort in ensuring that issues and resolutions are documented. Sometimes a three-way meeting, in person, by phone, or even email can be more quality, time, and cost effective for everyone.

The subcontractor in any contract deals with several issues in regard to the contract in order to perform duties that the contractor deem that he need another firm that specializes in that field. However, the contractor still maintains the responsibility of supervising and implementation of the whole contract. Therefore, the subcontractor reports to the contractor according to the subcontracting agreements and the contractor has different responsibilities and obligations in regard to the contract.
The main aim of including a subcontractor is to bring on board in order to access specialists, flexibility in team creation without the need to temporarily extend own staff and potential different costs.
